Powder is the hardest dry product to pack accurately: fine particles bridge in the hopper, compress unevenly, throw dust into the seal and often absorb moisture the moment the pack is open. The dosing system matters as much as the machine. What you need to know about packing powder

Five things decide which powder packaging machine you need and how it is configured, whatever the pack.

Dosing method decides accuracy

Powder is dosed by volume, using either an auger filler or a volumetric cup. An auger filler is a servo-driven screw in the hopper: each fill is a set number of rotations, so it handles fine, dusty and poorly flowing powders such as flour, milk powder, spice blends, cocoa and chemical powders. A cup filler is simpler and cheaper and suits free-flowing powders such as sugar and salt. Multihead weighers are for granules and snacks, not fine powder.

Flow behaviour and giveaway

Powders bridge, rat-hole and settle to a different density from the top of a hopper to the bottom, so a fixed volume can weigh differently fill to fill. A servo auger compensates for density change and a hopper agitator keeps product moving. Overfilling every pack by a few grams to stay legal becomes a large giveaway cost over a run, which is why the auger filler is the default for powder.

Dust in the seal area

Fine powder that drifts onto the film during filling sits in the heat seal and gives a weak or leaking pack. Powder packaging machines control it with a shut-off nozzle on the auger, a forming tube that delivers product below the seal line, bag tapping to settle the fill before sealing, and dust extraction at the filling head. Ask for these when your powder is fine or aerated.

Hygroscopic powders and barrier film

Milk powder, protein powders, instant beverage powders and many chemical powders absorb moisture from the air and cake. Pack them in a barrier laminate (foil or metallised film) with strong seals, keep the product path enclosed from hopper to bag, and consider nitrogen flushing where shelf life matters. The hopper and filling head should be sealed, not open to the room.

Hygiene and changeover

Food, dairy and pharmaceutical powders need stainless-steel contact parts that strip down without tools. Our machines are built in SUS304 food-grade stainless as standard; any product that contains salt (seasoning blends, salted spice mixes, some chemical powders) is specified in SUS316, which resists salt corrosion far longer, at a modest uplift to the quotation. Auger screws and hoppers are swapped, not scrubbed in place, so allergen and flavour changeovers are quick. Detergent and chemical powders need the same strip-down against corrosion and cross-contamination.

Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS)

A VFFS machine forms pillow bags, gusseted bags and sachets from roll film, doses the powder and seals the bag in one cycle. With an auger filler it is the standard choice for flour, milk powder, spices, detergent and chemical powders from small sachets to multi-kilogram bags. The SAP-520 with auger filler was chosen by a South African chemical manufacturer for a new large-bag powder line, followed by further machine orders.

Horizontal Form-Fill-Seal (HFFS)

An HFFS machine forms stand-up pouches, zipper pouches and flat sachets from roll film, then fills and seals them in a horizontal sequence. For powder it is specified with a double-head or 8-head auger station and SUS316 food-grade contact parts, as proposed for a spice-powder producer replacing premade pouches with gusseted zipper bags made on the line. Choose HFFS when the pack must be a premium retail pouch.

A cup fill and seal machine drops a pre-formed cup or tub, doses the powder into it and heat-seals a foil or film lid. It suits instant beverage, meal-replacement and supplement powders sold as a single serving in a rigid cup. Automatic and semi-automatic versions are available.

Capsule Filling

Capsule filling equipment doses pharmaceutical and nutraceutical powders into hard capsules and closes them. It is the powder machine for supplements and dispensary work where the dose is a capsule rather than a bag. Semi-automatic units suit small batches; automatic machines feed a blister or bottling line.

Frequently asked questions about packing powder

How do you stop fine powder getting into the seal?

Fine powder in the seal is the most common cause of leaking powder packs. A powder packaging machine controls it with a shut-off nozzle on the auger, a forming tube that delivers the dose below the seal line, bag tapping before the jaws close, and dust extraction at the filling head. We fit these to order based on how your powder behaves on trial.

Yes. Milk powder, whey, protein and instant beverage powders run on VFFS and HFFS machines every day. They need a barrier laminate film, an enclosed product path from hopper to bag, strong seals and, where shelf life matters, nitrogen flushing. Keep the hopper lidded and the packing room dry: exposure to air is the weak point, not the machine.

Auger filler for fine, dusty or poorly flowing powders (flour, milk powder, spice blends, cocoa, chemicals); cup filler for free-flowing granular powders (sugar, salt, coarse coffee). The auger costs more but holds accuracy when density changes and reduces giveaway. If you are unsure, send a sample and we test both on trial.

A servo-driven auger dispenses a fixed number of screw rotations per fill, so consistency is high once the screw and agitator are matched to your powder. The achievable tolerance depends on density and flow, which is why we confirm fill accuracy on a trial with your actual powder rather than quoting a brochure figure.
