Packaging Machine Types We Supply in Johannesburg

We supply shrink wrapping and shrink sleeve equipment, flow wrappers, vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal lines, can filling and seaming, capsule and sachet filling, cup fill-seal, tube filling, labelling and cartoning. The range runs from standalone machines to fully automated lines. The types most often specified by Gauteng manufacturers are set up and powered in our Riversands workshop, so you can watch one run before you choose. The machine that suits you depends on your product, your packaging film and your required output.

Not sure which machine will work with your product?

Bring your product in and we will test it before you buy. Bring the packaging film you intend to use and the carton you pack into, and we will run a sample batch on the machine we have recommended. Riversands is off the N1 at Fourways, so for most Gauteng buyers this is a morning rather than a trip. Courier the product to us instead if that is easier. No deposit is required for the trial.

What you will get after the trial:

✓  Finished sample packs
✓  Footage of the trial
✓  Recommended machine configuration
✓  Production estimate

Prices and quotes

Packaging Machine Prices and What a Gauteng Quote Includes

The price of a packaging machine depends on four factors: machine type, production speed, level of automation and customisation. We prepare a detailed quotation once we know what you are packing and at what rate, rather than publish a figure that will not apply to your product. Quotes to Johannesburg and Gauteng sites include delivery from Riversands and installation by our own technicians, because the team is local. A quote that has to carry travel and accommodation reads differently.

What the quoted price includes
✓  Delivery from Riversands to your Johannesburg or Gauteng site
✓  Installation and commissioning by our own technicians
✓  Operator training on your product and your film
✓  Warranty period, set out in the quotation
✓  Common wear parts held at Riversands

Terms on entry- to mid-level machines are 50% deposit and 50% before delivery. Complex, customised and full-line projects are structured around the Factory Acceptance Test and set out in your quote, and we are open to adjusting terms to suit your cash flow. We do not offer in-house financing, but we are a registered vendor with Wesbank and supply the quotes, specifications and documentation your bank requires. See the payment and financing questions.

Machine type

A semi-automatic L-bar sealer and a multi-lane VFFS line are different orders of investment. The machine type follows the product and the pack, so this is settled before price is.

Production speed

Output is the single biggest lever on cost. Doubling units per minute usually means more lanes, heavier framing and faster servo drives rather than the same machine run harder.

Level of automation

Hand-loaded, semi-automatic, or fully automatic with infeed and end-of-line. Automation is priced against the labour and rework it removes, and in Gauteng that trade-off is usually against putting on a second shift, so it is worth quoting both ways.

Customisation

Product dimensions, pack size and added features such as date coding or gas flushing. Standard-range machines cost less and arrive sooner than a custom build.

Packaging Machine Delivery and Installation Across Johannesburg Metros

Machines are dispatched from Riversands, which puts most of the Witwatersrand within a same-day round trip for our installation team: the northern suburbs, Ekurhuleni, the West Rand and the Vaal. If your plant is in Pretoria or Centurion, the Pretoria and Tshwane page sets out delivery and support up the N1.

A machine held in stock at Riversands takes 7 to 10 working days, covering delivery, installation and configuration at your factory. Around the Johannesburg metros we can occasionally deliver same day, depending on technician availability. A machine that is not in stock takes 10 to 12 weeks from receipt of deposit, which covers the factory build, the Factory Acceptance Test and freight. We do not quote a lead time we have not confirmed with the factory first.

Choosing the machine

How to Choose a Packaging Machine for a Johannesburg Production Line

Six factors determine which machine suits your plant: product type, required output, pack format, power supply and floor space, budget, and your expected production in three years. We confirm all six before preparing a quotation. Because most Gauteng plants are a short drive away, we do this in person. We walk your floor, check the power you have and the film you already buy, and quote from what is actually there. We then recommend the most cost-effective machine that still has room to expand.

01

Product type

The product may be a powder, granule, liquid or solid. The product type determines the filling system, which may be an auger, multihead weigher, volumetric cup or liquid pump.

02

Output required

We work from the units per minute you produce in normal operation rather than a peak-day figure. The required output determines whether a single-lane, multi-lane or fully automatic line is suitable, and whether one shift is enough to cover your packing season.

03

Pack format

The pack format is what you sell into, such as a pillow bag, stick pack, doypack, zipper pouch, tray, bottle or shrink multipack. The format usually narrows the choice to one or two machine types. If you are packing to a supermarket listing or an export specification, send it to us and we will work to those requirements.

04

Floor space and power

You supply the voltage, phase and frequency, and the machine is built to that specification. Please tell us at the start if the line will run on a generator for part of the day, so that it can be allowed for in the design. Because we can visit the plant, we confirm the footprint, ceiling height, door width and the position of your compressed air supply on site.

05

Budget

Your budget helps us determine which machine configuration makes commercial sense. We recommend the most cost-effective machine that meets your requirement rather than the largest machine available.

06

Where you will be in three years

Room to expand is part of the specification. A producer who wins a national listing often needs more output within a year, and it is better to add to the line than to replace it. We therefore specify with the next step in mind rather than only the current volume.

Johannesburg FAQ

Packaging Machine Lead Times, Installation and Spares in Johannesburg

These are the questions we are asked most often by manufacturers in Johannesburg and Gauteng. If your question is not answered here, phone the workshop. You will speak to someone who installs these machines, not a call centre.

Can I see a packaging machine running before I buy it in Johannesburg?

Yes, and we would rather you did. Our Riversands workshop keeps machines set up and powered, so you can watch one run before you commit to it. Bring your own product, the film you intend to use and the carton you pack into, and we will run a sample batch on the machine you are considering. That is the only reliable way to know how your product behaves through a forming tube, a filler or a sealing jaw. Most Gauteng buyers come twice: once to see the range, and again to sign off a trial on their own product.

Machines in stock at our Riversands warehouse: 7–10 working days, covering delivery, installation and configuration at your factory. In and around the Johannesburg metros and wider Gauteng, we can occasionally deliver same day, depending on technician availability and scheduling.

Machines not in stock: 10–12 weeks from receipt of deposit. This covers the factory build, the Factory Acceptance Test and freight, through to delivery, installation and configuration at your factory.

Custom configurations are quoted per project. We don’t quote a lead time we haven’t confirmed with the factory first.

Our own technicians, not a subcontractor. They position the machine on your floor, connect it to your power and compressed air, dial in the settings for your product and film, and stay until the line is producing sealed packs at the rate quoted. Operator training happens on the same visit, on your product, with your staff, so the people running the machine on Monday morning are the people we trained. Because we are based in Johannesburg, a follow-up visit during the first weeks of production is a drive across town.

Common wear parts are held at Riversands: sealing elements, heating bands, drive belts, blades, seals and sensors. A routine replacement is a collection or a local courier the same week, not an eight-week import. Less common assemblies we bring in to order, and we will tell you honestly which category your part falls into when you phone. Keeping the fast-moving items on a shelf in Gauteng is the single biggest difference between a line down for two days and a line down for two months.

Yes. A service call to a plant in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni or the West Rand is a drive rather than a flight, which is why our response times in Gauteng are what they are. We service the machines we supplied, and we will look at equipment bought elsewhere where we can source the parts. Worth asking before you replace a machine that may only need a seal kit, a new element and a proper service.

Riversands is our demonstration and dispatch base, and it serves the whole country and into Southern Africa. What this page covers is specifically what Johannesburg and the wider Gauteng radius get: a walk-in showroom you can visit during business hours, same-week local delivery on stock machines, installation by our own team, and fast-moving spares on the shelf here rather than in a container.

We do not provide in-house financing, so machines are paid for directly. Many of our customers finance through their own bank, and we supply the quotes, specifications and documentation banks require. We are a registered vendor with Wesbank, and we have supplied machines financed through Nedbank and Absa.

For entry- to mid-level machines, terms are 50% deposit and 50% before delivery. For more complex, customized, or line production machines, terms are structured around the Factory Acceptance Test and set out in your quote. We are open to adjusting terms to suit your cash flow, so tell us what works for your business and we will discuss it.

Yes. CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration that a machine meets European health, safety and environmental requirements, covering guarding, emergency stops and electrical safety. The conformity documentation is supplied with the machine. It is not a South African legal requirement, but it is a widely recognised safety benchmark and many buyers ask for it. If your industry requires additional documentation, tell us what you need and we will obtain it from the manufacturer.

Factories specialise. A plant that builds powder fillers builds little else, and perfects it. So rather than sourcing everything from one supplier, we work with a different manufacturer for each machine type. For anything outside our standard range, we obtain quotes from three factories, and we visit and inspect them in person before a build is committed.

We work back from the product and the pack. Product type first (powder, granule, liquid or solid), then the output you need in units per minute, the pack format you are selling into, the floor space and power you have available, your budget, and where you expect production to be in three years. If your plant is in the Johannesburg metros we prefer to walk your floor before quoting. From there we recommend the most cost-effective machine that still has room to scale, and you can bring a sample to Riversands and watch it run.

Both. Many Gauteng customers start with one machine, filling, sealing or wrapping, and add to it as volumes grow. We also supply complete lines, including filling, sealing, wrapping, labelling, coding and end-of-line automation, laid out as one system.

Yes. Our equipment is specified to fit into existing lines, and we assist with layout planning and automation integration where it is needed. For a plant inside the Johannesburg metros we would rather come and measure the line ourselves than work off a drawing, because it is a drive across town. Send us your layout and conveyor heights and we will confirm what fits before you commit.

Yes. Depending on the machine type, they run laminated films, polyethylene, polypropylene and other heat-sealable films. Film choice affects sealing temperature and achievable speed, so bring a roll from the Gauteng supplier you actually buy from to your showroom trial rather than a substitute.

We supply both entry-level and high-speed industrial machines. Output ranges from small-batch production to high-volume manufacturing, and the achievable speed depends on the model, the product and the film. Several Gauteng plants run our machines across two shifts, and we quote against that reality rather than the factory headline figure.

Yes, within limits that we will be straight with you about. Common changes are product dimensions, pack size, output speed and added features such as date coding or gas flushing. Anything outside our standard range is quoted from three factories, and we inspect the plant before a build is committed.

Price is driven by machine type, production speed, level of automation and any customisation. Rather than publish a figure that does not apply to your product, we quote in detail once we understand what you are packing and at what rate. Quotes to Johannesburg and Gauteng sites include delivery from Riversands and installation by our own technicians. Payment terms and financing documentation are covered in the questions above.

Yes. Every machine includes a warranty period, set out in your quotation and sales agreement. Beyond the warranty, technical support continues: phone and remote assistance first, and a technician on site in Johannesburg or Gauteng when the fault needs hands on the machine.

Call the workshop. Most faults are settings, wear parts or sensors, and can be resolved on the phone with your operator. If it needs a technician, a plant in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni or the West Rand is a drive rather than a flight, and common wear parts are held at Riversands so the repair does not wait on an import.
